Same work, new acronym? Mapping 17 AEO checks against an SEO audit

Two printed audit checklists side by side on a desk, matching upper rows linked in red pencil and the lower rows of one sheet left unmarked.

Quick Answer

SEO and AEO share only the infrastructure. A technical SEO audit covers crawl access, speed, canonicals and schema; AEO adds AI agent rules, llms.txt, standalone answers, claim fidelity and multi-engine visibility.

So when you ask which companies specialize in AEO, ask what each one does on those second rows. Paying twice for the first is the quiet mistake. The second rows are where the work turns strange: a page can pass every crawl and still be described wrongly, or not at all, by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.

Did this answer your question?

Key Points

  • Webflow's AEO playbook, walked through on YouTube in December 2025, opens on HTTPS redirects, a global canonical URL, an auto-generated sitemap.xml and minified code: rows technical SEO audits already check.
  • In AEO Content's repo-based knowledge-base pilot, the admin page described two-factor sign-in as an authenticator app, while the real sign-in screen sends a one-time code by text and email.
  • Practitioners auditing AI visibility in an August 2026 thread run "the same prompt 5x or 10x each," because LLM answers are non-deterministic and shift between runs.
Three things SEO-led marketing teams believe. Myth or fact?
Call each one, then see how other readers called it.
1 A current technical SEO audit already covers every check an AEO audit runs.
2 Some site builders now give AI bots their own access switch, separate from search crawlers.
3 Keyword ranking reports already show whether AI engines name your brand.

The shared rows link up. The content and measurement rows stay unmarked.

Specialist AEO firms earn their fee on the work an SEO audit skips: rules for AI agents, passages that answer alone, claims checked against the product, and visibility sampled across engines.

The question reaches me in two versions. Which companies specialize in AEO, and which are the best? Both arrive dressed alike, and under them sits a third, quieter one that nobody quite says aloud: specialize in what, exactly, if the work is the same?

The field is crowded and a little feverish. In one July 2026 thread where a recent graduate asked where to begin with AEO, three of the commenters were promoting AEO products of their own. Nothing sinister in that. It does mean the label on the door tells you almost nothing. The rows behind it tell you everything.

So I mapped them. Crawl access, speed, canonicals and schema line up with a technical SEO audit almost row for row, and a specialist who bills you for those again is selling the same dress twice. The rows that refuse to line up are the ones worth paying a specialist to own: rules written for AI agents, passages that stand alone as answers, and claims that match what the product actually does. One December 2025 AEO explainer gave the reason in a single sentence: "If the AI can't verify what's real, it fills in the blanks and gets it wrong."

Measurement is the last row, and the darkest. A 2022 SEO newsletter warned that "A single metric is always going to be incomplete," and it was written for a page of ten links, not for an answer that names one brand and leaves the rest in shadow. AEO Content builds its work around those divergent rows: scoring, citation-ready content and visibility measured across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, in one loop. Here is where each row falls.

In September 2026 the line went around again, soft and certain of itself: SEO, AEO, GEO and AIO are the same work under different acronyms. I wanted to test it the slow way. Row by row, against what a standard technical SEO audit already checks. The claim holds for the plumbing. Somewhere deeper, in the content and in how anyone proves that content worked, it starts to come apart at the seams.

SEO has long defined search visibility as the estimated share of traffic a site can expect from ranking for keywords, a pool of clicks spread down a page of links. AEO, as Julia McCoy's channel put it, is "the process of making your content easy for AI tools to find and use as a direct answer," and the same video warned that "AI tools don't just crawl your content. They interpret it." Interpretation is where the old audit goes quiet.

Our own knowledge-base pilot showed how quiet. It wrote the same two knowledge-base questions twice. In the first round, with web research still allowed, 30 to 38 web sources entered each article, about a third of one article was regulation, attack statistics and industry framing, and each article carried 15 to 18 first-person opinions. Under a code-only rule, the second round had zero web sources and zero first-person opinions. The questions never changed. Everything underneath them did. I doubt any crawl would have told the two rounds apart, and that doubt is where the mapping begins.

Questions this article answers

Three questions this piece answers

  1. Which AEO checks does my technical SEO audit already cover?
  2. What does an AEO audit check that an SEO audit misses?
  3. Should I extend my SEO audit or buy a separate AEO audit?

Alex and I carry a combined 40+ years of SEO and content infrastructure work into this mapping, and the old yardsticks still pull at us. A 2022 newsletter put position 10 at 2 per cent visibility. An AI answer has no position 10.

Which AEO checks does a technical SEO audit already cover?

Crawl access, robots.txt, canonical URLs, sitemaps, HTTPS redirects, page speed, heading hierarchy and alt text appear in both checklists, so a competent technical SEO audit already covers most of them.

Before buying a separate AEO audit, I would put the one you already own through four steps:

  1. Pull the rows your last technical SEO audit actually ran, not the rows its proposal promised.
  2. Mark every row that also appears in the table below as covered.
  3. Flag any covered row that only tested a search crawler, because robots.txt can hold separate rules for AI agents.
  4. Carry the flagged rows, and nothing else from this list, into the AEO scope.

Webflow's AEO playbook, as the Yar YouTube channel walked through it in December 2025, opens on rows any SEO auditor knows by touch: HTTP redirecting to HTTPS, a global canonical URL so tracking parameters cannot split a page, an auto-generated sitemap.xml, and minified HTML, CSS and JS so bots can read the site faster. A 2020 SEO audit walkthrough opened on nearly the same rows. It wanted pages under a megabyte and images under 100 kilobytes, and it treated the sitemap line in robots.txt as a step too many sites skip.

A comparison of 4 checklists, published between 2020 and 2026, shows the same infrastructure rows returning almost word for word, like a dress let out and worn again to a different party. The names change. The stitching does not.

CheckWhat a technical SEO audit testsWhat the AEO checklist addsVerdict
HTTPS and redirectsSSL certificate in place, HTTP sends visitors to HTTPSSame redirect, plus a set default domainFully covered
Canonical URLsDuplicate URLs competing for one pageGlobal canonical so tracking parameters do not split a pageFully covered
XML sitemapSitemap exists and is listed in robots.txtAuto-generated sitemap.xml submitted to Google Search ConsoleFully covered
Page speedPage weight, image size, server responseMinified code so bots parse pages fasterFully covered
Title and heading hierarchyClear titles, no skipped heading levels, no misplaced H1sSame structural checkFully covered for structure
Alt text and accessibilityAlt text on every image, labeled links and buttonsDescriptive alt text, form labels kept even when hiddenFully covered
Crawl and index accessCrawl errors and indexing statusWhether the first server response carries readable textPartly covered
robots.txtSearch crawlers allowed, sitemap listedSeparate rules for AI botsPartly covered

Contrary to the pitch that AEO needs a technical audit built from nothing, most of that table is old work. Most rows close cleanly. The crawl-access row and the robots.txt row stay half open, and the open half is where the new money goes.

The crawl row stays open because an SEO crawler confirms that a page was fetched and indexed, while an AEO check asks what the first server response actually carried. A polished page that assembles itself in the browser can arrive almost empty, a lovely shell with something missing deep inside, and one free technical AEO audit flags retained pages below 500 normalized text characters for that reason. Rendering was always an SEO concern. What changed is who reads the first response.

At AEO Content our offer is plain: named in AI answers in 90 days, or we work free until you are. An offer like that depends on these rows being clean before anything else begins, which is why, when a platform cannot pass them at all, we point clients toward a site rebuilt for AI crawlers instead of another round of patches.

Except the robots.txt row. Stare at it long enough and it splits in two, one door for the search crawler and another, darker door the old audit never thought to try.

How audit scope shifts as AI answers grow

Use each forecast to judge which line items in an AI-answer proposal your site platform or existing audit already covers.

61/100
Medium confidence 12-24 months

More audit engagements will be scoped around confirming that changes worked. Unproven items will be reported as unknown or unverified rather than passed. Two things drive this: teams that apply every recommended fix still see problems persist, and practitioners cannot tell strategy from luck when material starts appearing in AI-generated answers.

61/100
Medium confidence 12-24 months

Search reporting will run on two tracks. Keyword reports will stay anchored on monthly search volume, where 'high' still means over 1,000 monthly queries. AI-answer reports will run the same prompt 5 to 10 times because LLM outputs are non-deterministic. Buyers will increasingly expect both tracks in one retainer rather than a keyword report alone.

Contrarian Take
60/100
Medium confidence 12-24 months

Contrary to the pitch that AI answers are the next traffic channel, buyers will judge AI-answer work mainly on how assistants position and describe their brand. That means sentiment for specific use cases, sampled across repeated runs of the same prompt. The reason is that practitioners expect direct referrals from LLMs to stay 'unlikely to come'.

60/100
Medium confidence 12-24 months

B2B sellers will restructure product material into direct question-and-answer formats. These will be keyed to buyer-journey-stage questions and to buyers' stated specifications, as purchase research moves into assistants. Users started 41% more commercial conversations than a year earlier. In one case, a Manchester school's £572,000 3G football pitch contract went to the second most expensive quote after an AI assistant flagged a cheaper bid that left out the specified tarmac sub-base.

Not Yet Confirmed Webflow's AI-answer playbook walkthrough treats its speed check as a publishing-settings toggle. Creators pitch pasting a site into an AI chatbot for a free audit, and Screaming Frog stays free up to 500 URLs. Bobb's checklist refuses to count audit rows marked UNKNOWN, UNVERIFIED or NOT RUN as passes. Separately, a team on a major software company's international site applied all recommended fixes and the problem persisted. Practitioners who measure AI answers before and after changes recommend running each prompt 5x or 10x and re-checking, because the answers shift. B2B marketers already track positive or negative LLM sentiment for specific use cases and brand positioning 'as LLMs see it', while writing off direct referral clicks. A practitioner who restructured material into direct Q&A formats saw it pulled into AI-generated answers sometimes. Separately, a school business manager leaning toward a cheaper bid missed a specification gap that the assistant caught.

Market shifts that would reverse these calls

Growth in AI referral clicks, more stable LLM outputs or a pullback in platform defaults would each weaken the forecasts above.

Built-In Uncertainty

“Shared technical checks become free defaults” rests on the firmest evidence in this set; “Referral clicks stay thin and brand framing pays” is the one most likely to be proven wrong first.

  • Referral traffic could become the main yardstick again if clickable brand links keep spreading.
  • After inline brand hyperlinks replaced citation chips in May 2026, daily OpenAI referrals rose from about 158K to 249K, and the share of answers with a clickable brand URL rose from 4-5% to 22%. If that continues, AI-answer reporting could fold back into ordinary analytics.
  • The split between shared checks and new measurement would also narrow if LLM outputs became stable enough that a single prompt run was reliable, or if site builders stopped shipping technical checks as default settings.
Methodology Each forecast is scored 0-100 from the public sources shown for it: how many there are and how authoritative they are.

What do AEO checks measure that an SEO audit never looks at?

AEO checks grade three things a crawl never sees: rules written for AI agents, passages that stand alone as answers, and whether a page's claims match the product itself.

Start with the door. A technical AEO audit reads the agent groups inside robots.txt and watches the root response for AI-bot user-agent signals, which is a different question from whether a search crawler got through. The practitioner who documented one such audit warns that a successful fetch is narrower evidence than it feels: it shows what one tool saw from its own infrastructure, not that every official crawler IP, geography and path will work. In an April 2026 r/DigitalMarketing thread on AEO versus SEO, one commenter named the three most common blind spots that keep AI crawlers out: robots.txt issues, a missing llms.txt, and Bing indexing gaps. An SEO audit asks who got in. The AEO row asks who was quietly turned away.

Then the passage. The same commenter drew the line with unusual care: SEO optimizes for ranking signals such as backlinks, keywords and authority, while AEO optimizes for extraction, meaning whether an AI engine can pull a clean, self-contained answer out of a page without the surrounding context. Their method was strict, almost severe. Write each H2 as if it were the only thing the AI would ever see, make the first sentence beneath it answer the heading, and cut the preamble. "No warm-up paragraphs," they wrote.

Nothing on a technical audit grades that. Title tags and meta descriptions are written for a results page, a little shop window under glass. Heading order gets checked for skipped levels, never for whether the paragraph beneath can survive being torn loose and read alone, somewhere strange, by a reader who never saw the rest. A thread in r/b2bmarketing named the cost: when a website is vague, inconsistent or buries the answer, the model has very little clean material to work with.

The third row unsettles me most, because it has nothing to do with markup at all. In our repo-based knowledge-base pilot at AEO Content, the admin page described two-factor sign-in as using an authenticator app, while the actual sign-in screen sends a one-time code by text and email. An article written from the documentation would have repeated the admin wording, smoothly, confidently, wrong. Reading the product end to end, from the admin setting to the screen a user sees, is what surfaced it, and every product claim we checked line by line against the code held.

A crawler would have passed both versions. Only one told the truth. In practice, factual fidelity is the AEO row with no SEO ancestor, because an answer engine that lifts a wrong sentence lifts it with your name attached.

And beneath all three sits a measurement problem no audit row can hold. Another commenter in that same thread reported that ChatGPT recommends their product for semantic search for WooCommerce over competitors with 100k+ installs, while Perplexity gives it zero mentions. Same page, same crawl, two engines telling two different stories, which is why visibility tracking across engines has to live outside the audit, sampled again and again, like a pulse you keep taking because the first reading felt wrong.

Should you extend your SEO audit or commission a separate AEO audit?

If your technical SEO audit is current, keep it and pay only for the AEO rows it cannot run, never for the shared ones twice.

My decision rule has four parts, taken in this order:

  1. Confirm the SEO audit is recent and its fixes actually shipped. If not, finish that work first, because AEO built on a broken crawl has nothing to stand on.
  2. Keep the shared infrastructure rows inside the SEO engagement, where they already live and already get paid for.
  3. Scope new AEO work only for the rows with no SEO ancestor: rules for AI agents, passages that stand alone as answers, claims checked against the product, and visibility sampled across engines.
  4. Ask every vendor how it proves a change worked, and hold it to that answer at renewal.

Practitioners agree on the order, if not on the proportions. In a July 2026 r/aeo thread, 5 of 8 commenters said AEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it, and one put AEO and GEO at "only 10% additional." A December 2025 thread in r/Agentic_SEO offered a different split entirely: "Geo:= 80% seo+ 20% AI search." Two confident ratios. Neither one measured.

That vagueness is where the first shortcut breeds. In the same r/Agentic_SEO thread, one commenter said founders "probably get at least 2-3 cold pitches from desperate SEOs each month" selling AEO, and another told an agency to "Double your price and keep doing what you're doing," with a footnote that this assumes the results are already good. It reads like a joke. It also reads like a business plan. A retainer that renames crawl hygiene as AEO and bills for it again is the same dress, sold twice, under softer light.

The second shortcut is cheaper and somehow stranger. A short creator video posted on 1 October 2026 tells viewers to paste their site into ChatGPT, ask it to act as an SEO and AEO expert, and treat the reply as a free combined audit. A chatbot's opinion of your page is one answer, from one engine, on one afternoon. It cannot tell you whether an AI crawler was refused at your door, or whether one engine names you while another forgets you exist. Free is not the problem. Unverified is.

Proof is the thing worth buying. Even a buying guide written by a tracking vendor's head of growth concedes that most AEO tools are dashboards on similar data, and that the real difference is whether a tool can prove anything happened after you publish. Hold every AEO proposal to that line, including the ones your own team writes, and start the scope from the questions AI engines are answering about your market rather than from last year's keyword list.

One commenter in that r/aeo thread suggested a test worth running before any contract is signed: open ChatGPT and Perplexity logged out, ask a real buyer question, and look at which pages the answer came from. The cited sources, they reported, were mostly third-party, roundups, comparison pages, Reddit threads, the odd directory, and almost never the brand's own blog. Run it once, late, alone with the screen, and watch whose names come back instead of yours.

Which of your AEO rows does your SEO audit already pass?

AEO Content has run 26,577 real AI-visibility audits; start with a free readiness audit and sort its findings into rows your SEO audit covers and rows it never checks.

SEO fights for positions 1 through 10. AEO, as Julia McCoy's channel framed it in December 2025, fights for the only spot that gets shown, and a page whose claims drift from the product loses that spot without a sound.

What will matter most in AEO audits over the next 12 to 24 months?

Proof will matter most. Shared technical rows are sliding into platform settings and free tools; what buyers will pay for is evidence that content changes moved answers across engines.

I read the evidence as three slow currents, each already visible if you know where to stand.

PredictionWeak signal todayWhy it mattersSource
Shared technical checks become free defaults.A Webflow checklist walkthrough handles HTTPS redirects, minification and the global canonical URL inside Webflow's own settings panels, and a page-settings feature now scans a page and uses AI to generate basic schema markup. One creator promises a chatbot that "will audit your website and tell you which area to change, what to add."Before paying for a separate AEO audit, count how many rows your platform or a free crawler already handles.Webflow AEO checklist walkthrough, December 2025
Audits move from fix lists to verified results. An in-house SEO manager on a major software company's international site described weeks of reviewing code and the back end; the team applied all the recommended fixes, and the problem persisted.A checklist pass says little about whether a change worked. Ask every provider how it proves one did.SEO manager career interview, September 2023
Reporting splits into keyword volume and prompt sampling.Practitioners run "the same prompt 5x or 10x each" because LLMs are non-deterministic, and report answers that "shift within 24 hours, sometimes 9 am versus 6 pm on the same prompt." Keyword reporting, by one 2022 definition, treated an average of over 1,000 monthly queries as high volume.Monitoring cost grows with prompt count and run frequency rather than keyword lists, and retainers will be priced that way.Practitioner thread on auditing AI visibility, August 2026

I hold the first row with the most confidence and the third with the least. Free tools carry a soft danger of their own: a chatbot asked once to audit a site returns one answer, and a commenter in that August thread named the flaw in a single line, "A single check just samples one run." One reading. Nothing more.

Should site builders begin shipping AI crawler rules and answer passages as defaults too, the line I have drawn would move deeper into the content rather than vanish.

Measurement is where the forecast could still go wrong. One B2B SaaS agency in the same discussion wrote that "ahrefs shows us a handful of citations while chatgpt-sourced meetings run several a week." If dedicated tools stay that far from what buyers report, the third row bends, and the most trusted number in an AEO report may come from a sales call rather than a dashboard. The agency found its own count the old-fashioned way, by asking every inbound lead on the call where they had found the company.

Will SEO and AEO audits merge into one?

Only partly. The infrastructure rows are folding into one audit and into platform defaults; content fidelity and visibility sampled across engines remain separate work, with separate proof.

The July thread I quoted earlier concedes the floor. One commenter there called AEO "a second layer built on top of SEO" and warned that without the basics "the AEO work will not hold up." I agree, and that floor is already sinking into the software: Webflow switches on minification of HTML, CSS and JS in its publishing settings, a row nobody should pay to have checked twice.

Above the floor, the claim fails. Our pilot drained its articles of every web source and every first-person opinion, and no row in a technical SEO audit is built to notice a change like that. Proof breaks the same way. A marketer who rebuilt pages into direct Q&A formats said the content "gets pulled into AI-generated answers sometimes," and could not say whether strategy or luck did it.

Sometimes is not a result. The commenter who described that second layer also called asking AI systems your audience's questions and studying who appears "the most honest signal available right now." So ask, in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, more than once, and write down who comes back.

Frequently Asked Questions

What else do SEO teams ask about AEO audits?

Most questions circle one worry: paying twice. Shared infrastructure rows need one check; content structure, AI crawler access and sampled answers need work a standard SEO audit never scheduled.

Is AEO a different strategy, or SEO with a different coat of paint?

The April 2026 r/DigitalMarketing thread that asked this split three ways. One commenter wrote "AEO is SEO. LLMs do not rank content," another said people were selling "snake oil" to look relevant, and a third listed what does differ: how answer units are structured, whether FAQ schema is added, and whether AI crawlers can reach the site at all. I side with the third. The paint is real. So is the new wiring underneath it.

Does good SEO content naturally become good AEO content?

Only on purpose. A reply in the same thread said good SEO content does become good AEO content, "but only if you're intentional about structure." Intention has a shape here: each H2 written as if it were the only thing an AI would ever see, its first sentence answering the question the heading implies.

What is search visibility, and is there an AEO equivalent?

Search visibility is the estimated share of traffic a site can expect from its keyword rankings. In 2022, a widely quoted benchmark put a strong target at 35 to 45 per cent, roughly the click-through rate of a top-position URL. The evidence I worked from holds no comparable benchmark for AI answers. What you can count is whether ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews name you, how often, and in what words.

Do I need llms.txt if robots.txt is already right?

llms.txt is a plain text file listing a site's key routes, such as the home and pricing pages, so AI agents can find them without digging through the site code. Robots.txt decides who may come in; llms.txt is closer to a floor plan left on the hall table. The host of one Webflow checklist walkthrough admitted "there are debates on whether this is useful or not, but there is no harm in having it." Cheap to add, then, and strange to leave out.

How do I start an AEO audit with AEO Content?
