Yoast and Rank Math vs AEO: why SEO plugins are not enough for AI search

Quick Answer

Yoast and Rank Math handle titles, meta descriptions, sitemaps and basic schema well, but AI engines quote pages for answer-first writing, clean HTML and consistent facts, which no plugin setting reaches.

A 2026 MapilitMedia tutorial still calls Yoast "a complete SEO plugin, which handles all aspects of SEO on the website." Complete for Google's labels, maybe. Not for the sentence ChatGPT decides to lift.

Did this answer your question?

Key Points

  • AEO Content's client analytics show HelpSquad went from 5 inbound leads a month to about 20 a day, two months after its site moved off WordPress.
  • A 2026 WPAegis comparison counts over 15 schema types in Rank Math Free, while Yoast Free ships only basic Article, WebPage and Website markup.
  • AEO Content moves a site to an AEO website for $3,000 one time, keeping the old site live while a person reviews every page before launch.
Three things people believe. Myth or fact?
Call each one, then see how other readers called it.
1 A green Yoast or Rank Math light means ChatGPT will quote the page.
2 Rank Math's richer free schema settles AI search on its own.
3 Keyword rankings are a weak stand-in for customers.
Late evening in a small office, a wooden desk lit by a warm desk lamp, where a row of small green glass marbles sits in a neat line beside a stack of wooden blocks, each block a different height

Green plugin checks on one screen, the AI answer on the other.

Yoast grades a page with red, orange and green lights against a single focus keyword. Rank Math hands back a number out of 100 and checks related terms. Both grades describe how well a page is labeled for Google. Neither one reads the page the way ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews read it, looking for a sentence worth lifting into an answer.

A commenter in a 2025 r/Wordpress thread put the whole Yoast versus Rank Math argument in its place: choosing between them is "like asking which word processor is best for writing a best seller." Either will help. Neither writes the book. The same thread passed along an old rule from a professional SEO marketer about premium tiers: if you are not sure why you need the pro version, "then you don't need the pro version."

Even the people who teach plugin settings concede the point. A 2026 WordPress SEO tutorial admitted that a page can pass every check and still miss the top spot. Another practitioner waved off paying for AI writing features unless you believe AI can do the SEO work for you. Then added that it can't.

Short sentence. Hard truth. A green dashboard is a clean shirt at a job interview: it helps, and nobody gets hired for the shirt.

What follows is what the plugins cover, where they stop, and what changed when sites left the plugin stack entirely, starting with the label layer the plugins handle well.

Yoast and Rank Math are WordPress SEO plugins that write the labels search engines read: titles, meta descriptions, sitemaps and schema. They do that job well. They were never built to decide whether ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews lift your page into an answer.

Picture the dashboard. Every dot green. Readability passes, the keyphrase sits in the slug, and the schema graph says Article, WebPage, Website, which is about all the free Yoast tier writes. Then you ask Perplexity a question your page was written to answer, and somebody else's sentence comes back.

A practitioner on r/SEOorganic traced the real gains away from any plugin feature and toward "structured data and entity clarity," with the rest down to how the page is written. Another practitioner waved off the keyword density checks and readability "traffic lights" as vanity metrics a competent SEO never needed graded. Even the new AI additions run thin. Yoast now ships an llm.txt file. Useful, a little.

It does not rewrite your opening paragraph. The way I see it, the plugin grades the envelope, and the engine reads the letter.

Yoast and Rank Math tune the Google layer of a page: titles, meta descriptions, sitemaps, basic schema. Our 26,577 AI-visibility audits measure a different layer, the one answer engines quote.

Before you judge your plugin, check four things on one important page of your own site:

  1. View the page source and confirm the title and meta description match what you set in the plugin.
  2. Note which schema types the plugin actually outputs on that page.
  3. Read the first paragraph and ask whether it answers a buyer's question in two sentences or fewer.
  4. Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity that same question and see whose page gets quoted.

Steps one and two are the plugin's job. Steps three and four are not.

Yoast SEO launched in 2010 and, according to a 2026 comparison from WPAegis, runs on over 10 million active WordPress installations. Rank Math arrived in 2018 and passed 3 million active installs by giving away features Yoast kept behind its paywall. The same comparison counts over 15 schema types in Rank Math Free, including FAQ, HowTo, Product and Local Business, while Yoast Free ships basic Article, WebPage and Website markup. Yoast Premium costs $99 a year per site, and its WooCommerce, Local and News add-ons run $79 a year each.

Those are real tools. They write the tags Google reads. They build the sitemap and catch the broken redirects nobody remembers creating. I would not rip one out on a whim.

The common assumption is that a richer plugin means a site AI engines will quote. A plugin labels the page. It does not write the answer inside the page, and it has no say over how much builder markup sits between a crawler and the one sentence worth lifting.

We have scored 11,000+ domains across 15 sectors and 28 categories, and our team includes a full-stack engineer and content infrastructure architect with 20 years of building enterprise systems. That background is why I look at the plugin debate as a question about infrastructure, not settings. Strip a plugin down to its parts and the job gets small. In an August 2025 WordPress thread on Reddit, one developer said they no longer use an SEO plugin at all: "a handful of functions" embeds the schema, and one more puts the verification tags in the head element. Everything else, that commenter wrote, "is just good content" under a title that is not too long and not too short.

So here is a fair test of what your own plugin does for AI search. Open any key page and write down what the plugin puts into the page head: the title, the description, the canonical tag, the schema, the sitemap entry. Then write down the sentences on that page an engine could quote back to a buyer word for word. The plugin wrote everything on the first list. It wrote nothing on the second, and the second list is the one ChatGPT reads.

In practice, a green score tells you the label is filled in. The research section below walks through these findings. If you want the vocabulary straight before going further, our AEO knowledge base guides define each term in plain language.

And plenty of long-time WordPress owners have started to notice that the label costs more, and does less, than it used to.

What changed for our clients when their sites left the plugin stack?

Five inbound leads a month before we started. About 20 a day, two months after HelpSquad's site moved off WordPress. So was the plugin stack the problem? Our other clients' numbers point elsewhere.

Over the same move, HelpSquad's AEO Rank, the score we track in our client analytics, also climbed. Modern Wealth gives us a second WordPress case that moved the same way. On their own, the two cases look like a verdict against WordPress SEO plugins.

Then we checked the clients whose sites could never have run one. Counseling & Nature came to us on Squarespace. Understood Care and Seamless Chex started on Webflow and moved to AEO websites. Their numbers moved too. Understood Care's AEO Rank started at 37 and climbed.

One lead channel from that table, straight from our client analytics:

HelpSquad: confirmed bookings per month025507510014Jul*52Aug81Sep69Oct*
Source: HelpSquad's Google Analytics 4 key event "booking confirmed", read through AEO Content Studio. *July counts from the day tracking began; October runs to October 24, 2026. Bookings are one lead channel; calls and email come on top, for about 20 leads a day across all channels.

Three of the five sites never had a WordPress plugin setting to get wrong, so a plugin setting can't explain what held them back. Their gains also showed up on three different platforms. Our reading is that both point to the one layer every platform shares: the page an answer engine actually reads. All five moved to an AEO website. We have moved 14 client sites so far, and in every move a person reviews each page before launch while the old site stays live.

People who work inside WordPress every day describe the same split. In a June 2026 Reddit thread asking for the best AI SEO plugin, one commenter who said they had tested most of them called the AI features "mostly marketing right now." In their experience, the gains "came more from content structure, entities, schema, and topical authority than any plugin." Another wrote, "i don't think any WordPress plugin alone will solve GEO/AEO." A third described a newer kind of tool that hands AI crawlers a "clean data-dense version" of a site in place of script-heavy themes. If a tool exists to give crawlers a simplified copy, then the page underneath is what it is working around.

Not everyone in that thread agreed on how far markup alone gets you. The same commenter who described those crawler tools also wrote that "a plugin that injects good schema gets you most of the way; the rest is how the page is written." Even in that more generous view, the last stretch depends on the writing.

The page matters after discovery as well. On the Fatrank Podcast in September 2026, James Dooley, who is involved with a UK sports pitch builder, told how a head teacher pasted four contractors' quotes into ChatGPT and asked which offered the best value. By Dooley's account, the tool weighed the accreditation badges shown on the company's website, an insurance certificate and more than two decades of trading. The head teacher later said "ChatGPT was the one that made the decision," and the company won a £572,000 contract. One story, told by someone with a stake in it, proves no pattern. Still, it shows why we report leads and booked calls alongside rank.

Three platforms, five sites, one shared layer. The plugins kept doing their work on labels, and the numbers moved where the page changed. One honest limit applies. Each migration rebuilt the whole page at once, so our data shows the rebuild working as a package. It cannot tell you which single change carried the most weight.

Five checks before you add another plugin

  1. Judge any change by inbound leads and booked calls, the way we report HelpSquad and Modern Wealth, rather than by a plugin score.
  2. Write down the buyer questions you want to win, ask an AI engine each one, and count how many answers link your site.
  3. If your site runs on a heavy page builder, ask your developer what an AI crawler actually receives when it requests one of your pages.
  4. Check whether the proof a buyer's AI tool might weigh, such as accreditations, insurance and case studies, appears on your pages at all.
  5. Before adding another plugin, add up what the whole stack costs each month and ask which part of it changes what the page says. The old stack priced on our AEO website page (developer, agency, marketer, host and CMS) shows which line items to count.

How we checked this

All five client results, the AEO Rank scores, the 14 migrated sites and the old stack price come from our own client analytics and pages. AEO Rank is a score we built, and the five cases use different metrics over different time frames with no control group. We also read an anonymous Reddit thread of WordPress practitioners, some of whom promote their own tools, and a podcast anecdote told by someone tied to the company it describes. We sell website migrations, so we have a stake in this answer. Still unknown: which part of a rebuild matters most, and how long the gains last.

  1. AEO Content, client case results, from our client analytics, checked October 2026.
  2. AEO Content, AEO website migration and stack pricing, checked October 2026.
  3. r/SEOorganic, thread on the best AI SEO plugin for WordPress, June 2026.
  4. Fatrank Podcast with James Dooley and Kasra Dash, episode transcript on AI and buyer decisions, September 2026.

Why does a site with all green lights still go unquoted by ChatGPT?

Green lights grade the label, not the answer. Our promise to clients is about the answer: named in AI answers in 90 days, or we work free until you are.

The plugin score was built for a different reader. It checks whether a focus keyword shows up in the title, whether the meta description has the right length, whether the slug is tidy. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews are not reading for any of that. They are looking for a sentence they can lift whole and trust.

In 2024, Imran Siddiq of Web Squadron walked away from Rank Math after using it for four years. He spent three weeks comparing alternatives and moved his sites to Slim SEO. One complaint from that 2024 review stuck with him: the Rank Math on-page score could stay short of 100% until he clicked the content AI button, even when he used no AI credits at all. He called that requirement "pointless."

A score that moves when you press a button is not measuring the page. It is measuring obedience to the tool.

Think of a restaurant that passes its health inspection every year. Clean kitchen, correct labels, nothing on the floor. None of it tells you whether anyone wants to eat there on a Friday night.

An affiliate reviewer selling an AI-visibility add-on told a version of the same story. Yoast showed all green, Google rankings held steady, and when the reviewer asked ChatGPT the target question, the answer cited three competitors and not the reviewer's own site. Treat it as a pitch. Still, the shape of it matches the gap between label and answer.

Alex and I bring a combined 40+ years of SEO and content infrastructure experience to AEO. Long enough to know a checklist is a floor, not a ceiling. One of our clients went from a quiet site to 10 booked calls in 3 weeks, and the plugin settings were not the part that changed. The site underneath them was.

That rebuild is what it means to move your site to an AEO website instead of adding one more plugin on top of the old one. The words get rewritten answer first. The markup gets lighter. The facts get stated the same way on every page.

There is a second reason the lights stay green and the answers stay quiet. Some of what an engine weighs never sits on your site at all.

In a February 2025 r/localseo thread, practitioners trying to define AEO kept pointing off the page. One wrote that being on Google Business "is no longer enough," because language models pull their data from other sources. Another listed the work as FAQ or HowTo schema, conversational Q&A writing, reviews and mentions across the web, and a name, address and phone number that match everywhere. Their example was a person asking an assistant, "Who's a good pediatric dentist in Philadelphia taking new patients?" No plugin field holds the answer to that. It lives in reviews, listings and page copy, and all of them have to agree.

Julia McCoy, who sells AI training through her company First Movers, pushed the same idea harder in a December 2025 video. Her pitch was that AEO means a brand's presence across the entire web. She showed an AI Overview for project management software that named Asana, monday.com and Trello while citing TechCrunch, PC Mag and Capterra rather than the brands' own sites. That is her claim, made to sell her program. The screen she showed is still easy to test against your own category.

Ask an assistant the question your buyer asks. Look at which sites it cites. Then read what those sites say about you, and whether your own pages say the same thing.

Most owners do not start there, though. They start by swapping one plugin for another, importing thousands of settings across, and watching the dashboard turn green again.

Switching from Yoast to Rank Math changes the label maker, not the page. Growth is counted in customers; LiveHelpNow, which I founded, made the Inc. 5000 at #84 (2015-2018).

The swap itself is easy. In a December 2025 walkthrough, the URTechDotCa channel ran the Yoast import inside Rank Math and watched it pull across 8,600 items, a process the presenter called "pretty much all automated." Rank Math's free version analyzes posts against five keywords, where Yoast allows one. The presenter budgeted 150 US dollars for a Rank Math license plus content AI credits, so that AI could write new SEO titles and page snippets across 3,000-plus posts.

Notice what the money bought. Better titles. Better snippets. The body of every one of those posts stayed exactly as it was.

The forums say the same thing in plainer words. In a 2025 r/Wordpress thread, one commenter described Rank Math as "like Yoast without the baggage," while another reminded the room that "keywords and titles aren't incantations." A third commenter cut mobile load time on a home page from 4 seconds to 3 by switching off a plugin that page never used. That gain came from removing weight, not from adding a setting.

I read those threads the way you read a city from a bus window. Everyone is going somewhere. Very few are talking about where the answer engines are headed.

If you stay on WordPress for now, three moves matter more than which SEO plugin sits in the sidebar:

  1. Rewrite the opening of each key page so it answers the buyer's question in two plain sentences.
  2. Strip builder widgets, scripts and plugins from pages that do not need them.
  3. State your company facts, prices and locations the same way on every page.

None of the three lives in a plugin settings screen. All three live in the words and the markup.

That is also how AEO Content builds a knowledge base from a client's code repositories. Each article answers one question from the code only, with no web research, no outside statistics and no brand claims, and a deterministic check flags any leaked file name or outside link before publishing. The answer gets built from source material, line by line. If you want to see how that approach carries into ordinary articles, our page on research-driven content built on evidence lays it out.

The second move on that list is where most WordPress sites stall. The page builder underneath was never designed for a crawler hunting one clean sentence.

Is your plugin hiding what AI engines cannot read?

One practitioner on r/SEOorganic put it plainly: "Getting mentioned and getting represented accurately are two different problems, and the plugin layer only solves the first." Your title tags may be perfect. The page under them may still be silent.

Get a free AEO audit of your site and see which layer is holding you back.

What should you fix once the plugin lights are green?

Keep the plugin for labels, then spend the real effort on the page itself: answer-first openings, clean HTML, and the same facts on every page.

Eli Schwartz said something on Neal Schaffer's podcast in 2022 that has aged well. Most website packages, he argued back then, already handled the basics: custom URLs, title tags, meta descriptions, cross-linking and canonicals. "No one owns anything on search," he added.

Plugins are heading the same way. Schema and llms.txt files are turning into standard equipment, and standard equipment sets nobody apart. A plugin that writes good schema gets a page most of the way. Ask one question of every key page: if an engine lifted only its first two sentences, would a buyer get the answer, the price and your name right?

So I'd keep the plugin. Let it make the labels.

For HelpSquad and Modern Wealth, the next step meant leaving the plugin stack behind entirely. The migration costs $3,000 one time. The old site stays live while the new one is built, and a person reviews every page before launch, which matters more than it sounds when years of posts are about to change address.

Frequently Asked Questions

What else do people ask about Yoast, Rank Math and AEO?

Most questions come down to cost, switching and the small AI features plugins now add, and none of those answers changes what an engine reads on the page.

Does Yoast create an llms.txt file?

One practitioner reports that Yoast has added one. An llms.txt file is a guidance file for AI crawlers. Helpful, but it points engines at pages; it does not make those pages quotable.

Is Rank Math cheaper than Yoast for agencies?

On list price, yes. WPAegis puts Rank Math Business at $199 a year for up to 100 client sites and Agency at $499 a year for unlimited ones, while a single Yoast site needing WooCommerce and Local add-ons could pass $250 a year.

Should I switch plugins if mine already works?

In 2024, Imran Siddiq advised leaving a working, set-up plugin as it is. Switching made sense to him mainly when leaving a paid tier.

Do SEO plugins write useful alt text?

Not always. The lightweight plugin Siddiq moved to fills alt text with the image file name, with no image analysis, and he refined every image by hand.

How do I talk to someone about moving off the plugin stack?

Book through the AEO Content contact page at aeocontent.ai/contact. I'd bring your current plugin, your page builder and the three questions you most want ChatGPT to answer about you.
